IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Letter from Director Wallace Goode

To those committed to service:

During the 2008-2009 school year UCSC, with a professional staff of four plus 30 paid interns, helped over 3,000 students augment their academic learning with experiential learning by participating in some form of service. 7,000 – 8,000 community members were touched through community service by University of Chicago students. Civic minded students worked on campaigns raising over $100,000 to support their commitment to community, established a student-community service center in Woodlawn and started 10 new recognized student organizations, committed to community service. At present, the total number of Community Service Recognized Student Organizations (CSRSO) is 66.

Annually UCSC provides 100 internships. Last year over 300 students applied for these internships. The 100 students selected play significant roles in student government, CSRSOs and University advisory councils after their UCSC internship. Of the 75 student leadership awards granted in 2008 – 2009, 39 of the recipients had a UCSC affiliation.

Along with individual successes, the University received the Peace Corps Service Award for being the #1 school in producing volunteers, for universities in our size category, for the third year in a row. Annually Peace Corps and Teach for America rank as the top two places for University of Chicago graduates.
Experiential learning combined with community service affords the University an opportunity to broaden the educational possibilities for our students while promoting the University’s goal of becoming a national model for an urban research institution.

As UCSC service efforts continue to reach more students, community members, and neighborhoods, we strive to keep you informed through our website and weekly newsletter. For the 2009-2010 school year, every application and event will be found on our soon to be newly redesigned website ucsc.uchicago.edu to maximize convenience and clarity.

Our weekly newsletter will continue to provide upcoming service events, volunteer opportunities, internship/scholarship opportunities, and community service perspective throughout Chicago. Last year, our articles focused on UCSC programming – highlighting program accomplishments and community work. This year, our articles will place the spotlight on our community partners and those impacted by the work of our 15 programs over five focus areas.

Finally, I want to extend my sincerest thanks to each and everyone of you who commit to taking your skills and improving the community around you through service. It is impossible to meet, exceed, and enlarge our goals without the work you do with our neighbors in service.

But our work is not done.

With the entering 2013 class comes an opportunity to expand our efforts with fresh ideas and enthusiasm. As you attend the Engage Chicago, bring a friend to sign up with you. When you return to UCSC’s office, take a friend to learn about service. It takes a collective effort by everyone to inform students of service and maintain our goal of being a civically engaged, urban institution.
Students describe UCSC as their home; the place that gives them balance; the place where theory and action come alive. Welcome home.
Wishing all the best this year,

Wallace E. Goode, Jr.
Associate Dean of Students in the University
Director, UCSC
